How To Help Your Spouse To Deal With Diabetes

October 28, 2021 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Diabetes is a chronic condition that requires more than proper treatment. The patient has to stay a step ahead of the blood sugar levels to keep them under control at all times. Additionally, it affects their life in more than one way. If your spouse is a diabetic, you will understand the implications of the condition better than anyone else. It is life-changing, and even partners have to adapt. But you can do your bit to help them deal with diabetes and live a better life. Here are some ways you can support them.

Show interest in your spouse’s health

When your spouse has a chronic condition like diabetes, they need good care and support. Just showing them that you are there brings comfort that they are not alone in the crisis. Show interest in their health, from monitoring their blood sugar levels to reminding them about scheduled appointments. Remind them constantly that you are by their side through thick and thin.

Avoid nagging

While you must be there to provide ongoing support to your spouse, avoid nagging them about food choices. Let them control their urges and sugar levels because they will be as conscious as you are. Stop giving constant reminders unless you think they are sabotaging their health seriously. Going over the board with care can actually feel repulsive, and your partner may even refuse you help down the line.

Encourage healthy eating

Diabetes is chronic, but the good thing is that it is manageable with the right diet. You can help your spouse by encouraging healthy eating for your family. Try healthy recipes with ingredients such as low-sugar fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean protein, and healthy fats. Ditch sugar and try a zero calorie sweetener for cooking desserts. Make sure that your spouse need not give up on their favorites. Find ways to transform every dish into a diabetic-friendly meal.

Be a workout buddy for them

Apart from diet, exercise goes a long way with diabetes management. You can extend support by being a workout buddy for your partner. Consult a personal trainer to find a perfect workout plan for them. Ensure they are regular with exercise, and support them to stay on track with their goals and timelines. As a bonus, you will end up being a fitter and healthier version of yourself.

Understand mood changes

Diabetes does not only affect the body. Changes in sugar levels can cause irritability, confusion, depression, and even anger. Understand the issues and cope with your partner’s moods without losing your cool. They may also experience a loss of libido, but do not let it affect your emotional intimacy. Discuss the problems with your doctor or speak to a counselor for a solution. Work on them together, and things will surely get better.

It is natural to feel anxious about your partner’s health, but you must act as a continued source of support for them. With your love and care, they can overcome the symptoms and achieve control over the condition.
