How to Lead by Example for Dental Care as a Parent

December 22, 2023 by Juliann

As a parent, you are your child’s first and most influential role model. But you properly already knew that, didn’t you? Well, your behaviors and habits significantly impact their own attitudes toward health and well-being. They mimic their parents, and so whatever you do or say, they’ll be doing that too. So, when it comes to dental care, leading by example is not only effective but also essential for instilling lifelong oral hygiene habits in your children.

Of course, when it comes to all of this, you’re going to want to do everything you can to ensure that there aren’t any mistakes. So, with that said, here’s everything you need to know when it comes to leading by example for better dental care!

Put Your Dental Health First

If you want them to know how seriously this is taken, it’s all going to start with you and how to treat it for your body. So, just remember that leading by example starts with prioritizing your own oral health. So go ahead and demonstrate the importance of regular dental check-ups, daily brushing, and flossing by incorporating these habits into your routine.

This also includes regular dentist visits, where you feel completely fine and normal (be sure to bring them). When your children see that you prioritize your own oral health, they are more likely to understand the significance of these habits. Plus, they won’t have any negative thoughts about it either

Consider Making Dental Care a Family Affair

It doesn’t really need to be enjoyable, like eating dinner together, but creating this union will help a lot when it comes to leading by example. So, why not brush and floss together as a family? In a way, this helps with creating a sense of unity and shared responsibility.

Plus, this not only reinforces the importance of oral care but also provides an opportunity for quality family time. When it comes to dental visits, some families do them all together, and this can help your kids feel more at ease. You may also want to consider making it a fun and interactive experience for younger children by incorporating songs or games into your routine.

Limit Junk Food

Not just for your kids, but for you too! So, you need to keep in mind that as a parent, your choices regarding diet play a crucial role in influencing your child’s eating habits. Whatever you eat, they’ll want to mimic. So, you should seriously think about limiting the consumption of sugary treats and beverages in your household and explain the impact of sugar on oral health. They need to understand mindful eating, and you’ll have to be the one to instill that in them.

Discuss the Consequences

So, one other thing you’ll need to do is engage in open and age-appropriate conversations when it comes to the consequences of poor oral health. Of course, you shouldn’t scare your kids, but they do need to know better. So, it’s best to just go ahead and discuss topics such as cavities, gum disease, and the importance of maintaining a healthy smile. Ideally, if they’re really young, you’ll want to use simple language and visuals to help your child understand the direct relationship between their habits and the well-being of their teeth.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
