4 Tips for Beating the Aches and Pains of Old Age

December 22, 2023 by Juliann

Our bodies face natural changes as we enter old age, which often leads to aches and pains. This is because our joints, bones, and muscles gradually weaken, making them susceptible to discomfort and injury. Despite the normalcy of aches and pains during old age, they can limit physical activities, restrict social interactions, and contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation. Fortunately, there are many effective ways to manage the pain and live a fulfilling and active life.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

A well-balanced diet is essential for supporting overall health and well-being at any age, but it’s particularly useful for managing aches and pains as we grow older. As the body changes, our need for nutrition shifts, making informed food choices integral for longevity.

Most people know what goes into a healthy diet. Plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, fibre, and much less saturated fat. However, this doesn’t mean everyone has the power to follow a healthy diet. If you need help sticking to a healthier mealtime routine, consider consulting with a healthcare professional.

Engage in Regular Physical Activity

Even though overuse of muscles and joints can lead to aches and pains, regular physical activity is a powerful tactic for preventing aches and pains during old age. When you move the body regularly, your muscles get stronger, flexibility improves, and your cardiovascular system becomes healthier. All of this contributes to a more active and independent lifestyle during old age. If you find things are aching after you’ve done your exercise, you can take a look at CBD benefits because that might help too, giving you less pain and more motivation to keep exercising.

Seek Professional Guidance

Lifestyle modifications like getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and engaging in regular activity are excellent ways to manage aches and pains, but some persistent issues will require professional intervention.

Your GP should be the first professional you see but they may recommend alternative therapies, like  chiropractic treatment at a Bristol chiropractic clinic. During your first consultation with a Bristol chiropractor, your body will be assessed for any signs of misalignment. Then, a personalised treatment plan will be devised.

Maintain Proper Posture

Whether you’ve been treated by a Bristol chiropractic expert or not, spend time learning about the importance of proper posture. Good posture allows your weight to distribute evenly throughout the body, reducing strain on joints and muscles. Here are the key areas to focus on for proper posture:

  • Back: Keep your back straight and avoid arching backwards or forwards. Your shoulders should be relaxed and your hips level.
  • Head and neck: Keep your head aligned with the spine and your chin in line with the floor.
  • Feet: Keep feet shoulder-width apart and flat on the ground. Keep toes from pointing outward or inward.
  • Knees: Keep knees slightly bent when standing or sitting. Avoid crossing your legs or locking your knees.

While aches and pains are all part of the ageing process, it doesn’t mean you have to suffer through the experience. By integrating these small lifestyle changes and seeking professional support, you can keep hold of your independence and live a long and healthy life.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
