How To Raise Environmentally Conscious Kids

July 19, 2021 by Juliann

Every parent has a responsibility to teach their children about the importance of caring for the environment and leading a green lifestyle. Children are the future generations that will be playing a major role in protecting the environment, so the earlier that you can get them to take this matter seriously the better. Fortunately, this should not be too challenging as younger generations are already proving themselves to be passionate about the environment and children often have a great love of nature. Keep reading to discover a few ways that you can teach your kids to care for the environment.

Don’t hesitate to turn for help to ProEssayWriting to educate your kids to write an essay correctly.

Spend Time in Nature

One of the best ways to raise Earth-Friendly kids is simply to spend time in nature whether this is in the garden, at the local park or on a family vacation in the great outdoors. In addition to showing them the beauty of the planet, you should also show them how they can respect nature and the outdoors and the importance of protecting natural habitats.

Use Green Transport

Kids tend to adopt the same attitudes and behaviors of their parents, so a smart way to encourage them to be eco-friendly is to opt for green transport. You should walk or cycle when possible as a family (also a great form of exercise) and look into buying an electric car if you have not already – this could also help you to make big long-term savings!

Recycle and Reuse

Following on from this, another important habit to adopt is to recycle and reuse what you can. You should educate kids on the importance of preventing waste from going to landfill and why recycling is worthwhile along with what can and cannot be recycled. For things like old clothes, toys and games, you should donate these as opposed to throwing them in the trash.

Grow Plants in a Greenhouse

One of the most effective ways to get kids interested in nature and the environment is by growing plants in a greenhouse. Even as an adult, it is amazing to see plants coming to life under your care and many kids are fascinating by gardening. You could even grow your own fruit and veg in a greenhouse, which is a fun project that also allows you to reduce your impact and save money on groceries. You can find advice on assembling a greenhouse online and you will want to find one that is right for your garden.

Conserve Energy

Many parents get frustrated when their kids leave the lights on or do not turn off the TV when they are not watching it (this is usually from a financial perspective rather than an environmental one). Keep in mind that it can be hard to understand how a light switch can have an impact on the environment, so you need to educate them on energy consumption while encouraging them to switch off things when not in use (this should also help you to make savings!).

These tips should help you to educate your children on the importance of being green and hopefully allow them to feel passionate about the environment.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
