Keeping Them Well: 3 Ways to Make Pet Wellness A Priority

December 20, 2022 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Having a pet is a massive amount of responsibility. The pet will rely on you to feed them, help them exercise, clean up after them and be there for them when they need you. During Covid-19 lockdowns there was an upsurge of people taking ownership of pets whilst they use this to help their own mental health and wellbeing however do we ever think about the pet’s wellness? A lot of pets are very much like humans. They get anxious if they eat too much and don’t exercise, they get overweight, and a lot are very attached to their owners. It is important that if you are the owner of a pet then you appreciate this responsibility and you take it seriously. Here are three tips to make pet wellness a priority.

Insurance Cover

If you have never had a pet before then you may not actually appreciate the amount of money it could cost you if something goes wrong with their health. A quick visit to a vet could easily turn into hundreds or thousands of pounds depending on what is wrong. Especially if complex surgery or ongoing treatment is needed. If you do not have that money to hand, you may then make the unfortunate decision of putting the pet to sleep; however, with a pet insurance policy, this may not be necessary. Petsure’s pet insurance is a fitting example of a company that offers tailored insurance policies for your pet. The level of insurance you take out can also be flexed around your needs which can start with extremely basic care for the pet, up to covering for almost any eventuality. Make sure you take a look at the “excess” options as the smaller the excess you take, the more expensive the policy could be. There are several payment options that can be taken with these insurances which would include paying up front and renewing it annually (based on your acceptance of the quote) or splitting this cost down to monthly payments which seems to be the preferred way people do this.

Exercise

Not all pets need a lot of exercise, but some do and without this, they could get unwell (both mentally and physically). If you take a rabbit as an example, if all day, every day they are locked in a hutch, then they are not getting to fully exercise. It is important that they get the ability to leave the hutch each day and run around exploring and having fun. Another good example is a dog. The bread of a dog will make a lot of difference in terms of the exercise they need but it would be unfair (in fact cruel) if you had a dog that never went out on a daily basis, at least once, to run around. As people have work to address then it is worth thinking about services like dog walking where people would take your pet out for the day, or a few hours.

Food

Many pets will have their own personal likes and dislike in terms of the food you give them however it is especially important you do not react to their hunger cravings all the time. Most pets will continue to eat and eat if it is all available to them therefore do not use this as a sign, they are hungry. Make sure you research the best types and frequency of food to give your pet. Getting this wrong could make them ill and potentially overweight, and an overweight dog can have a lot of long-term health risks.
