Working in an office may not be a very physically demanding career, but that doesn’t mean that you’re health is not at risk without the proper levels of self-care. Inactivity, poor nutrition, lack of sunlight and using computer screens all contribute to reduced health, and that’s without mentioning the potential stress and pressure of the job itself.
You may already have a self-care routine which you stick to at home or at the gym, but as you probably spend most of your time at the office, you need to maintain your efforts there as well. Looking after your physical and mental health at work will not only improve your wellbeing, but may also improve your energy and performance levels.
Eat a nutritious balanced lunch (and snacks)
We are regularly told that breakfast is the most important meal in our days, but all too often we neglect to consider our lunch and daytime snacks. Rather than buying another pre-made sandwich, grabbing a donut or missing lunch altogether in favor of yet another coffee, try to make your lunchtime meal more nourishing. A balanced meal of protein and carbohydrates with fruit, nuts and vegetable snacks (or even a healthy smoothie) throughout the day will boost your energy and improve your mood so you don’t get that mid-afternoon slump.
Move around and stretch when you can
Take every opportunity to move and stretch whenever possible. You can stretch your legs and arms when sat at your desk, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and walk a few laps around the office. If you have the chance to get outside during the day make sure you get some fresh and air and sunshine too as being out in nature can have a calming effect on your brain and body. A wearable fitness tracker can help to motivate you to increase your daily movement and work towards new goals.
Be conscious of health and safety
We’ve all sat through the obligatory health and safety training, but that’s not where our responsibility for our own safety ends. There are potential dangers everywhere which may seem minor, but even a small accident can have disastrous consequences.
Look out for trip hazards and if you see anything which could cause a problem, be sure to tell a supervisor. If your employer is neglecting their duties in terms of providing a safe environment for you and your colleagues, and you are the victim of an accident as a result, you may be entitled to compensation. Speak to The Compensation Experts to find out if you may be eligible to make a claim.
Declutter your work environment
If your desk or office is messy and disorganized, it can worsen anxiety or stress, so take some time now and again to clear out the clutter and put things in order. You don’t necessarily need to have everything pristine, but keeping things ordered with a few personal touches such as photos or motivational quotes and calming artwork can make a big difference to your mindset.
