Have you ever noticed that your skin seems extra dry during the winter? In fact, it is during these colder months of winter that people notice that their skin is at its worst. Annoying skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dry, itchy skin tend to flare up as the temperatures drop.
This happens because our skin is exposed to sudden temperature changes. We face the cold air and wind when we are outdoors, and then the heat from cranked-up thermostats when we are indoors- which really leeches moisture from the skin!
In fact, 82 percent of Americans feel that the winter months are when their skin is at its worst, according to survey results from CeraVe®, conducted online by Harris Poll among more than 2,000 U.S. adults. That’s why CeraVe®, the therapeutic skincare authority, is helping people find the solution to their dry skin and flare-ups on January 8th, Winter Skin Relief Day. I never knew such a holiday existed, did you?
It makes sense, however. I have tried countless brands of skin care to help moisturize my skin throughout the winter season, but no brand even comes close to being as effective as CeraVe.
The key to maintain healthy skin during the winter is to keep it hydrated! Not only by drinking plenty of water, but by using a moisturizer with ceramides. Ceramides are a crucial component of the skin barrier and help seal in moisture and seal out impurities. Ceramide deficiency occurs naturally in skin over time, but can be exacerbated during the winter, triggering uncomfortable skin conditions associated with the season. People prone to skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and even acne are especially impacted, as the changing weather can lead to flare-ups, making ceramides even more vital to a proper skincare routine.
“Skin becomes drier and more sensitive during the winter, so it’s essential to adapt a regular skincare regimen to include rich, moisturizing products,” said board-certified dermatologist Dr. Melissa K. Levin. “Using hydrating creams like CeraVe® Moisturizing Cream daily can help replenish ceramides in the skin barrier, lock in moisture and protect from winter irritants.”
My winter skin care routine includes my favorite CeraVe products: Moisturizing Cream, Itch Relief Moisturizing Lotion, Foaming Facial Cleanser and Healing Ointment.
Every day during the colder months, I wash my face with the Foaming Facial Cleanser. It is such a luxurious cleanser! It removes every trace of makeup from my face, and does not irritate my eyes. My face feels nice and supple after every use. I even use it to shave my legs. The bottle is much larger than most facial cleansers you can purchase, so it lasts a long time- and it very cost effective. (Plus, it works better than even the most expensive brands!)
After my shower, I apply the Moisturizing Cream from head to toe. It is rich and creamy, yet absorbs completely without leaving anything behind except softness. I make sure to apply it while my skin is still a bit damp, and it seals the moisture into my skin.
I must add that this cream is my absolute favorite hand cream! My hands actually transform from rough and scaly- to soft and youthful in seconds!
The Itch Relief Moisturizing Lotion is perfect for relieving the itchy skin on my arms and legs, and sometimes on my back (after a long day of wearing my favorite ‘itchy’ sweaters.)
I use the Healing Ointment on my elbows, knees and heels. In fact, I have slathered my feet with this skin-saving miracle at night time, and then I put on cotton socks to sleep in. By morning my feet are perfectly hydrated. I also use this ointment on my dry cuticles, and even my lips!
