The Emotional Impact of a Contested Divorce: 6 Ways to Cope

April 22, 2025 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Coping with contested divorce.

It’s no secret that going through a divorce can be a profoundly depressing and draining experience; it’s safe to say going through a contested divorce can compound this. Even the dissolution of an unhealthy relationship can carry with it a sense of loss. Conflict, uncertainty, and change – even if it’s in the best interest of both parties – often leaves individuals feeling down and depleted.

Understanding how to cope during such a time is not only important, it’s imperative to your mental and emotional wellness. Read on for five ways to ease the emotional impact of a contested divorce in Florida.

1. Seek Support

A counselor may be a helpful option. A good therapist can be a neutral party who can help you process current emotions and navigate any difficult feelings that arise. Other options include group therapy or support groups. These can have the added benefit of helping you to connect with others going through similar experiences.

Having a trusted friend to confide in can also be helpful, especially if he or she has experienced something similar. Something as simple as a weekly catch-up on the phone or enjoying a quick bite to eat together can lighten the emotional burden.

2. Focus on Self-Care

Self-care can look different for different people. Consider creating a list of activities you find calming and stress-relieving. This can be something as simple as cuddling up with a cup of tea and a good book, a hot bath, a yoga class, or even a nature walk. If you need more indulgence, plan a spa day, a weekend trip, or even a staycation to allow yourself some reprieve from the stress you’re experiencing.

3. Set Intentions for the Future

While divorce may represent the end of a chapter, it may also create an opportunity for you to enjoy new beginnings. Adjusting your focus from disappointments of the past to possibilities of the future can open you up to new, fulfilling experiences and connections. Setting personal goals, exploring new interests, or even considering a career change can provide a sense of new direction. Focusing on evolution and exciting new experiences can help diminish hopelessness.

4. Practice Journaling

Writing about your emotions can be an incredibly therapeutic way to process your feelings. Journaling allows you to release emotions such as resentment, sadness, or anger in a safe and healthy manner. Journaling also helps clarify your thoughts and provide insight into your emotional state, making it easier to navigate the divorce process.

5. Develop New Routines

Stress can skyrocket in the chaos of a contested divorce. Not to mention, life can begin to feel unsettled and isolating. One step you may decide to take involves creating some new routines. This can offer a much-needed, refreshing reset. Whether it’s a new morning or evening ritual, a daily exercise regimen, or listening to a new podcast before bed, new routines can offer a sense of organization and calm.

6. Explore New Hobbies or Activities

A divorce often opens up time and space for new opportunities. Exploring hobbies and activities that pique your interest can broaden your horizons. Whether it’s learning an instrument, taking up gardening, or trying a new fitness class, exploring new ideas and adventures can be a great way to redirect your energy. These new pursuits can provide a sense of accomplishment, joy, and distraction, helping you reconnect with yourself and perhaps even someone new.

While a contested divorce is something most would prefer to avoid, if you find yourself in an unfulfilling relationship that ends in this way, these helpful tips can make it possible to navigate the experience with a greater sense of hope and self-awareness and create a future where you enjoy more rewarding relationships with yourself as well as others.
