The Link Between Gut Health and Acid Reflux

August 24, 2018 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Did you know that acid reflux can occur when your gut health is out of balance? This is something that I have only recently learned. My husband has suffered from acid reflux for most of his adult life. I always assumed it was just from overeating, and/or eating too much, which is definitely a part of the problem.

Acid reflux is directly linked to your gastrointestinal tract. It occurs when the acid from your stomach comes back up your esophagus. This can cause great discomfort, and it can damage your esophagus if it happens often enough.

To get relief from his acid refux, my husband always gobbles down antacids and heartburn medications. He has tried every brand and formula on the market. The one thing we had never thought of for  acid reflux relief is probiotics.

I take a daily  gut health supplement for my own health because I seem to get recurrent urinary tract infections and digestion problems, and they have really helped to combat my problems, but my husband had never tried any form of probiotics until his doctor suggested it.

My husband’s doctor suggested that my husband needed to change his diet by eliminating soda, alcohol, caffeine, coffee, certain juices & sauces, and spicy foods, and start taking  probiotic supplements.

The doctor explained that that heartburn (or acid reflux) may be a symptom of an unbalanced gut bacteria. He also suggested that over-the-counter acid reflux medications and antacids could actually cause an imbalance of gut microflora (the good bacteria that our bodies need.)

Antacids and heartburn medications may be wiping out the good bacteria in your body in their effort to make up for the absence of acid in the stomach. It all started to make sense to my husband. We immediately ordered a few bottles of the highly recommended  anti-acid reflux formula probiotics that the doctor suggested.

After about one week of taking these probiotics and changing his diet, my husband has definitely noticed a difference. He has not needed any antacids or heartburn medications at all. I am thankful that we have an educated doctor who took the time to explain the link between gut health and heartburn!
