The Most Common Health Issues for Dogs

November 3, 2021 by Juliann Leave a Comment

You likely view your dog as an important member of the family. Therefore, it’s natural you will worry about their health and happiness when they are doing poorly. Yet, like their owners, dogs are vulnerable to various health issues that can affect their activity levels, mobility, happiness, and mental health.

It is impossible to predict the type of issues your hound might experience over the years. However, familiarizing yourself with potential problems could help you identify the correct solution to restore your canine’s health. Here are the most common health issues for dogs.

Skin Problems

Skin problems are common for many dog breeds. Typical signs include:

  • Itching
  • Scratching
  • Inflamed, red, or flaky skin
  • Hair patches

There are various potential causes for a dog’s skin complaint, such as infections, parasites, and allergies. If your dog shows signs of a skin issue, book an appointment with a vet as soon as possible.

Diarrhea

Dogs don’t discriminate when it comes to food. They’ll happily eat fresh food in their bowl or leftovers in the trash. While it might stop them from feeling hungry, they are more likely to feel unwell after eating garbage, grass, or other materials. As a result, they might experience a bout of diarrhea and vomiting.

Diarrhea isn’t only limited to their dietary choices either, as your dog might struggle with the issue when feeling stressed, such as when traveling or experiencing a change in environment.

The occasional diarrhea episode is normal, but frequent occurrences can impact your dog’s happiness and health, as they can cause dehydration. A probiotic treatment and gut supplement for dogs from Buddy and Lola could resolve the issue, as it will improve digestive gut support, populate beneficial gut bacteria, and help your canine maintain normal immune function.

Urinary Tract Infections

Peeing in the home might not be naughty behavior by your dog. It could be a sign they have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Unfortunately, the issue can go undiagnosed for a long time, as an owner might believe a dog has behavioral problems and not suspect a health issue.

Dogs of all ages can develop a UTI, but it is a common issue among puppies or dogs with an underlying health condition. In addition to uncontrollable urination, your pooch might display other UTI symptoms, such as:

  • Lethargy
  • Increased thirst
  • Blood in urine

The above symptoms are often associated with UTIs, but they could be a sign of another health condition, such as diabetes or kidney disease. Book an appointment with a vet to identify the cause of your dog’s symptoms and embark on the most effective solution.

Ear Infections

Ear infections are uncomfortable for any size dog. Common signs of an ear infection include:

  • Shaking head
  • Scratching ears
  • Ear discharge
  • Debris in the ears
  • A foul odor from the ear
  • Skin issues

An ear infection isn’t only itchy and painful, but it can lead to serious damage if untreated. If you notice any of the above signs, take your canine along to a vet ASAP.

Proper Care for Prevention

Even if you cannot keep an eye on your dog at all times, you can still provide them with proper care. That means checking their well-being now and then. Checking your pup’s gums is one thing. The state of their gums is a good indicator of their health and can help you make an assessment to prevent further problems.

Like humans, every dog is different. You’d have to look at their individual needs and come up with solutions tailored to their needs. For example, if they have dew claws, they need specific booties. Or if they can’t see so well with age, you’d have to replace their water bowl with a water fountain meant for blind dogs.

Finding specific solutions to your dogs’ needs will not only make them happier, it will lengthen their life span assuring you of their healthy company for longer.

Of course, proper diet is essential too. Give your canine friends nutrient-rich fresh dog food to start. Select a high-quality dog food that doesn’t contain steroids, hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, and other potentially harmful substances. By ensuring that your dog’s food is safe, you can keep them strong and healthy for a long time. And that also means fewer trips to the vet!
