Top Ways to Make Your Contribution to the Upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness Month

September 27, 2022 by Juliann Leave a Comment

It’s that time of the year again…The month-long breast cancer awareness campaign (1st to 31st October) is officially here, and it’s time to start planning your contribution to spread the word about breast cancer. Start by taking a moment each day to think about what you can do for the upcoming month, including using social media, reaching out to local organizations and individuals, or even volunteering your time at a local support center.

Scroll down as we share ways you can contribute to this month of breast cancer awareness and make a difference.

1. Get Yourself Tested and Wear Pink

Early detection is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. A mammogram is a specialised medical imaging test that uses low-dose X-rays to detect abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammogram screening in Fair Lawn, NJ or elsewhere is crucial when looking for early detection of breast cancer and other breast-related issues. It can detect changes in breast tissue that might indicate the presence of cancer – or at least suggest that further evaluation is needed.

Mammograms are typically recommended every year starting at age 40; however, women who have not had a mammogram within the past three years should have one done between now and October 31.

When you have had your screening, or even just beforehand, it would be a supportive idea to wear pink to encourage yourself and other women to undergo regular breast cancer screening. So, wearing pink can make a difference. In fact, this color has become one of the most recognizable symbols of breast cancer research, education, and treatment awareness.

According to the American Cancer Society, 83 percent of Americans are aware of pink-ribbon campaigns, but only 15 percent participate. Wearing pink is one way to spread awareness about these causes and raise money for them.

2. Get Involved in Breast Cancer Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are breast cancer research studies that investigate new treatments for cancer and other diseases. Research teams at universities, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies sponsor these studies so that they can learn more about how best to treat patients with certain types of cancer. Studies also look into possible ways to prevent cancer from recurring or spreading later.

If you (or someone in your family had a breast cancer history), you too can contribute to these clinical trials by volunteering your time or donating money for travel expenses for participants who need it. Many clinical trials ask for participants’ medical histories to make sure they don’t have any pre-existing conditions that may affect their ability to participate.

3. Help a Cancer Patient

If you have the opportunity, volunteer at a local cancer center or hospital and help the patients. You can also help by donating blood, volunteering at a fundraiser or donation drive, or making a monetary contribution to your local cancer center.

If you can donate money, spend it on something that will help the patient. A gift card is always appreciated and will allow them to purchase whatever they need for treatment and recovery. If you have time and resources, consider donating in their name through your employer’s retirement plan.

4. Fund Research Initiatives

The fourth way to contribute to the Upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to fund research initiatives that will support us in better understanding and treating breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has been working with researchers, government agencies, and private organizations to bring new therapies to patients needing them. This includes funding clinical trials, providing equipment for research labs, and coordinating with other organizations conducting similar studies.

Funding these studies helps advance our understanding of breast cancer but also helps save lives by finding new treatments or effective prevention strategies.

To Boil it Down

Above all, by joining the fight against breast cancer now, our future generations will grow up free of this terrible disease. Isn’t that worth taking a few minutes out of your busy schedule to do something to help? If you feel so inclined — and we hope you do — then this article has just given you some great ideas that you can use to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Beyond.
