What Can you do to Prepare for the Future ?

June 27, 2018 by Juliann

Dementia describes the different brain disorders which trigger loss of brain function.

With one in six people over the age of 80 having a diagnosis of dementia and around 850,000 people living with this illness, a number which is set to rise to over a million by 2025, what can you do to prepare for the future?

At this time of transition, many people start taking steps to eat healthier, exercise regularly and overall work towards extending their healthy years. But there is more to this, as healthy aging should include thinking about how best to manage financial, medical and family matters that you may face in your later years.

Taking some time to consider the issues ahead and planning accordingly can make the future easier and more enjoyable for both you and your family. Here are some areas to consider when planning ahead:

Healthcare and home

It is likely that you may require more healthcare in old age, so make sure that you have the correct health insurance. However, in addition to your insurance plan, ensure that you have a second to aid with costs that your first plan may not be able to cover, and keep your health and life insurance policy documents safely stored but in an easily accessible place.

While it’s not pleasant to think about, preparing documents, such as a living will and others that state your end-of-life wishes, can save you and your family from unneeded stress, especially in times of crisis.

It might be difficult to consider the idea that there will come a point where you will be unable to care for yourself. Occasionally, friends and family may not be able to give the care you need. With this in mind, it might be wise to make decisions about potential living arrangements, like a nursing home or assisted facility, hospice care and other available options which would work best for you.

Finance

It is never too early to consider the financial matters of growing older. Although financial assistance for senior health care is available, it’s best to begin planning well in advance. Start looking at your financial options early and consult with legal and financial professionals to ensure that you and your family are cared for in your old age.

A debilitating illness such as Alzheimer’s disease or stroke can rapidly put your finances at risk. Ensure preparations are made, and plans are developed with the event in mind that you may fall sick.

There are people who can assist you in making the necessary arrangements when you are ready to start planning. You can find family law solicitors in Bridgend who can advise you and your spouse or partner on legal issues and financial arrangements and draw up legal documents.

Saving for retirement is important to make sure you have enough money to enjoy life in your old age. Don’t forget to make sure that your hard-earned money is protected, and it’s accessible whenever you need it, and it is enough for you and your family to live comfortably.

By planning ahead and considering preparation well in advance, you can ease the challenges that may come with old age and ensure your retirement is as stress-free as possible.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
