What to Wear as a Chef

November 10, 2022 by Juliann

A chef’s attire is probably the most known and appreciated uniform in the world. It represents status and competence. This all started in the 19th century when Marie-Antoine Carême, a French chef, gave life to the chef’s uniform. Of course, the uniform has changed and evolved over the years, but the essential items still serve the same purpose. So, let’s look at the mandatory things you should wear as a chef.

Toque

If you work as a head chef, you should always wear a toque. Toque means hat in Arabic, and its purpose is to keep your hair from your face. Another reason why chefs wear big toques is for people to be able to spot them immediately. A full restaurant is crazy, and things get even crazier in the kitchen. Everybody should know at all times where the head chef is located.

As for symbolism, the toque represents technique. The bigger the toque, the more skilled the chef. It also shows a chef’s skill level. For example, if the toque has 100 pleats, the chef knows how to cook an egg in 100 ways.

Apron

The apron is another essential item for a chef to wear. The purpose of this piece of clothing is protection. As a chef, you wear the apron around your waist to protect yourself from hot liquids. It would be best to choose an apron that rests at your knees so that you can continue to move quickly around the kitchen.

Usually, chef’s aprons are white to represent cleanness. You can opt for a wax canvas apron if you’d prefer as these can easily be cleaned and worn again the next day. Aprons are very durable, so if you take care of them, you can wear the same one for many years.

Jacket

The jacket is the most crucial piece of chef’s clothing. It usually consists of a white double-breasted coat that everybody notices immediately. Its color is usually white to deflect heat. When choosing your chef’s jacket, you should look for one made from durable material with functional details. For example, TILIT offers some of the best chef’s coats out there. You can find them with both long and short sleeves, and made from recycled material.

Pants

The perfect chef’s pants must be durable, flexible, and breathable. Accidents happen all the time in the kitchen, and you need to be able to still have pants on at the end of the day. Flexibility is an essential factor because you move a lot when you cook. You should be able to breathe in them. Tight pants could damage your nerves and impact your mobility.

Shoes

You need comfortable shoes when you spend 8 to 10 hours in the kitchen. Some chefs choose clogs, others choose sneakers. Again, it’s a matter of practicality and comfort. The advantage of selecting clogs is that they are easy to clean at the end of the day. That’s not the case for sneakers, as some sauces might permanently stain them.

As a chef, you need to combine refinement with functionality. If you wear the proper chef attire, you can perform well at your job and inspire others to give their best when following your lead.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
