3 Reasons you Should Encourage Your Kids to Learn STEM

January 18, 2018 by Juliann

Science, technology, engineering, and math, collectively known as STEM subjects, are four area of learning that are considered to be of the utmost importance. It is these fields, more than any others, which drive our continued progress as a species, and which lie at the heart of devising solutions to the biggest problems we face collectively. STEM has received increased attention in recent years, as governments across the developed world seek to encourage students to pursue careers in one of these fields.

There are a number of reasons that any child can benefit from pursuing one of the STEM subjects and it is never too early to open their minds to the possible careers that it entails. Here are just some of the reasons that you should encourage your children to pursue a STEM subject.

Career Prospects

In terms of potential careers, STEM subjects offer some of the most lucrative and rewarding ones around. Not only are these careers that pay very well and offer excellent job security, but they will also potentially put your children on the front lines of securing work to solve some of the biggest problems that humanity faces.

It is only through the use of science and engineering that many of these obstacles can be overcome, and as our world begins to suffer the effects of climate change, for example, we are going to require ever more sophisticated solutions and approaches.

Opportunities for Women

The STEM fields have all been traditionally male dominated. Young girls have, sadly, been discouraged from pursuing careers in science and engineering in the past. However, these attitudes are now changing. Many STEM careers are still mostly male and we are a long way from complete equality, but the situation has improved dramatically, even over just the last decade.

Many parents grew up themselves in a time when STEM subjects were considered ‘boys subjects’, and so they might still feel that they are less suitable for girls. Actually, the opposite is now becoming true, as more women begin successful careers in STEM, the deficiencies that resulted from a lack of female input have become clear and many organizations now actively seek to recruit more women.

Encourage Curiosity

Perhaps your children have no interest in pursuing a STEM career. They might have their hearts set on something else and be completely unshakable in their resolve. Even if this is the case, it is still worth encouraging them to learn about STEM subjects. These subjects, by their very nature, encourage curiosity and inquisitiveness, as well as the use of scientific methods to answer any questions that might arise. Toys from KinderLab Robotics are an incredible educational resource to foster creativity and learning. They encourage many types of play and can be a good way to introduce young children to STEM concepts in an age-appropriate way.

Even if children have no intention of pursuing a STEM career, their lives will still be enriched by learning how to think about the world and approach problems according to the scientific method. For example, check out this guide from accessgems.com about how obsidian snowflake is formed. Kids love the way that precious stones and rare elements look. Learning how they are formed will show them that they can use science to better understand subjects that interest them.

Encouraging your children to learn about STEM subjects will encourage them to be more inquisitive about the world around them in general, it will teach them how to approach independent learning according to the scientific method, and will enrich their lives while fueling their thirst for knowledge.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
