8 Family Traditions to Build Stronger Bonds and Create Exciting Memories

February 18, 2022 by Juliann

Many people grew up with one form of family tradition or another without even realizing it. Family traditions are specific behavior patterns or activities that family members partake in together that reflect their values, beliefs, or interests. They provide stability and routine in children’s lives and are an excellent way for families to connect and create lasting memories.

Since we experienced the joys of family traditions, it would be great to let your kids enjoy them too. You can develop new family traditions for your kids or introduce some old ones your parents passed down to you. Here are exciting family traditions that can reinforce your family’s commitment to each other.

1.   Game Night

Family game nights never get old. They are an excellent family tradition suitable for kids of any age. Game nights help create conversations, encourage teamwork, build confidence, and boost brain development in kids and having a winmau dartboard or any other dart board is a must.

Pick out a suitable day of the week to host your game nights, preferably weekends, gather around the dining table and play your family’s favorite board game. You could switch it up and play other fun games like charades, paper plane contests, or any educational game.

2.   Traditional Meals on Holidays

Everyone enjoys a good meal, especially during the holidays. You can learn how to cook like a professional chef and cook special meals for your family. The memories around holiday meals do not begin at the dining table but in the kitchen. So, let other family members participate in putting the meal together. Your kids will likely enjoy the cooking experience.

3.   Shopping for Families in Need

It’s essential to teach your kids to care for others in need. You can do this by making sharing a part of your family tradition. Allow your kids to go shopping with you to pick out essential items like food, coats, gloves, blankets, and socks to deliver to a local homeless shelter.

You can do this on special occasions like their birthdays to make them know that everyone isn’t as fortunate as they are. That way, they’ll appreciate the things they have and learn a valuable life lesson. You can even encourage them to save for the items all year round by collecting spare change in a ’’giving jar.’’

4.   Love Notes for the Kids

You could surprise your kids by leaving them heart-shaped love notes occasionally. These positive notes are a great way to express your love for your kids and how much you believe in them, so they’ll always remember they are special. Fun spots to leave such notes are in kids’ backpacks, lunch boxes, bed pillows, bathroom mirrors, and on their car seats. They won’t forget such pleasant memories in a hurry.

5.   Family Service Days

If you want to teach your kids how to help people and serve their community, consider having family service days. Your family can volunteer at an assisted-living facility or nursing home to care for senior citizens around you. You could offer to rake the leaves in your neighbor’s yard in the fall or donate toys and clothing your kids no longer want to others in need.

6.   Family Picnic

Picnics allow you to escape your daily routine and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. It promotes family bonding and mental health because the environment can help us release some built-up stress. Family picnics also have physical benefits because you’ll be able to engage your muscles in a natural environment. So, select a suitable weekend for your family to enjoy the outdoors in a favorite location. Pack a blanket for lounging, a kite to fly, and some food.

7.   Christmas Tree Decoration

Christmas tree decoration is a wonderful family tradition that lets the little ones participate. You could pick out a real Christmas tree together or get one from the attic and set it up. Kids love decorating and selecting ornaments. So, let them put the first ornaments for the tree and say why the ones they chose are special to them. Remember to take pictures and make short video recordings of the Christmas tree decoration process.

8.   Back-To-School Photos

Children grow fast; that’s why we should take time to appreciate each stage of their development. Thankfully, pictures help us preserve beautiful memories. Taking photos on your kid’s first day of school is a great family tradition to repeat every year and include in your family photo album. It also motivates you and your kid for a fresh start in the new school year. Try to keep it simple and focus more on connecting with your child.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
