Switch Up Your Career with These Alternatives

September 13, 2022 by Juliann

Somewhere in the middle of lockdown, The Great Resignation happened. We had been stuck inside with nothing but time. That time was spent thinking about how we really felt about our lives. Where is it and where can it go? And that prompted a lot of people to leave jobs that weren’t fulfilling them, jobs that didn’t respect them and jobs that didn’t allow them the freedom they craved.

Does that sound familiar? Were you someone who is looking for a world without a boss, without a desk, or without stress? Well, we can’t promise no stress, but we can help you get less stress. Look at our ideas to switch up your career for the better.

Answering to a boss? Go freelance

A lot of people who enjoy working from home cite the same reasons as a freelancer for loving it. You have more control over your time, you can work around other responsibilities, and you can finally breath without a micro-manager nearby.

Ah, but that one isn’t true of someone who isn’t working for themselves. If you were to go freelance you can take control of your life. Work as much or as little as you need to for the time and do it all on your own terms.

The simple step is to simply take your current role and go online with it, but if you’re looking for a change, you can look into copywriting or journalism if you have writing skills, accounting if you have maths skills, and being a personal assistant if you have organizational skills.

Sitting behind a desk? Try an active career

If you’re tired of your back sagging and your legs cramping under a desk, you can look into making fitness your career. You can find gym instructor or personal trainer courses online and gain a qualification that will allow you to take on clients looking to get healthier.

Take it a step further and specialize. There are courses in nutrition, postnatal fitness, fitness for mental health, and fitness dealing with long term conditions. All of these will allow you to set higher prices and you can take on as many or as little as you need.

Had to close the restaurant for lockdown? Try ghost kitchens

If you’re more culinary minded, you might have thought about opening a restaurant. But Covid wreaked havoc on restaurant premises, and a lot didn’t survive. However, a lot chose to adapt. Suddenly the takeout option wasn’t limited to unhealthy versions of Indian and Chinese food, but expanded into every type of food imaginable: pasta, pastries, cocktails, etc.

This allowed a lot of new concepts to arrive, including the idea of ghost kitchens. No front of shop, no waiters to hire, simply you in your own kitchen handing over the food to a delivery driver. If you have the skills, it’s a great first step in an industry that famously, doesn’t otherwise have one. Before, you either opened a restaurant or you served to the family. This can be that in-between.

Is home getting boring? Try the digital nomad life

Maybe you’ve done nothing but dream about the fine sands and lapping waves every time you open a spreadsheet. We don’t blame you, but why are you only dreaming. The digital age has made the nomad life easier than ever.

If you take us up on the idea of freelancing, you don’t even have to ask permission from your boss. Simply secure your visa, pack up, and hit the road. Take advantage of the newfound mainstream appeal of video calling and work from a hammock on an island.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
