Common Prenatal Issues for Mommies-to-Be to Know

December 26, 2022 by Juliann

Pregnancy can be a challenging time for many women because it involves a number of physical, emotional, and social changes. Numerous physical changes like body swelling, tiredness, vomiting, etc. occur within a female body while she is expecting. These symptoms can be uncomfortable and may make it difficult for a woman to carry out her usual activities. Pregnancy can also be a time of great emotional upheaval, as a woman has to deal with the prospect of becoming a mother and the many changes this will bring to her life. Pregnancy can also be a time of great stress, as a woman worries about the health of her baby and the challenges of childbirth and parenting. Pregnancy can also involve a number of social changes, as a woman’s relationships with her partner, friends, and family may change.

All these challenges can make a woman vulnerable, and adequate prenatal support is necessary from the partner, friends, and family for the pregnant woman to make her move through the nine months and even afterward.

This article highlights the common prenatal issues that all mommies-to-be should be aware of.

Morning Sickness

This is a common and normal pregnancy symptom that can cause nausea and vomiting, usually during the first trimester. It is thought to be caused by the hormonal changes of pregnancy. 8 out of 10 women experience morning sickness during their pregnancy phase.

Fatigue

Pregnancy can cause fatigue and a lack of energy, especially during the first and third trimesters. This can be due to the physical demands of pregnancy, as well as the emotional and psychological demands. Becoming a mother isn’t easy; it can be a tiring and restless phase.

Back Pain

Pregnancy can cause back pain due to the weight of the baby and the changes in a woman’s center of gravity. This can be especially common during the third trimester. As the weight of the baby increases, maintaining body balance can be tough for the expecting mother as well; as a result, severe back pain starts.

Swollen Feet

Pregnancy can cause swelling in the feet and ankles due to the extra fluid in the body. This is usually more common in the third trimester and can be relieved by elevating the feet and avoiding standing for long periods of time. The condition of having swollen feet is referred to as pregnancy edema. Regular foot massages can help relieve the pain.

Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension (PIH)

This is a condition that can occur during pregnancy and is characterized by high blood pressure. It can be a serious condition if not properly managed and can lead to preterm labor and other complications. Women who are prone to having this condition are advised to reduce their salt intake and increase fluid intake, and often medicines are prescribed to them.

Gestational Diabetes

This is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and can be managed with diet, exercise, and medication. It is important for pregnant women to have regular blood sugar monitoring to ensure that gestational diabetes is properly managed.

Women need to give themselves time, carry out exercises, and enjoy their pregnancy and postpartum phase to the fullest.

Welcome to Beautiful Moms

Hi! I’m Juliann, a wife to my wonderful husband, Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I first started Beautiful Moms Blog in 2008, my goal was to connect with and support other moms who were in the thick of raising young children. It became a creative outlet where I could share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with companies that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It’s so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. I have always believed that every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she’s in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms Blog has grown and evolved right along with me. Today, my children are adults, and I have embraced the blessings of being a grandma. My passion for encouraging women hasn’t changed—it has simply expanded to include every season of motherhood, from pregnancy and the newborn years to raising teenagers, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I’m excited to have my daughter, Myelie, as a contributor to Beautiful Moms. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood. She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a home wherever life takes you.

Together, we’re here to support women through every age and stage of motherhood—from pregnancy to menopause—with helpful advice, honest product recommendations, beauty and wellness tips, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

We are PR Friendly and love working with great companies!
