The Importance of Knowing Yourself Before Pursuing a Career in Nursing

October 25, 2023 by Juliann

Nursing is one of the most rewarding careers, but also a role that demands a lot from your person. It is important to connect with who you are before you pursue this path into healthcare, because if you don’t know what you’re about, then you won’t ever be able to commit to the process. This guide explains all below.

Nursing and Mental Health

It is not a major secret that nurses can struggle with mental health from time to time. Just like any role with emotional demands and long shifts, it is bound to take its toll in one way or another. This is why you must be able to connect with your mind and get to know your tolerance and capacity markers before you step into an active role.

Coping With Tiredness

It is also true that there will be a certain level of tiredness that comes with the role, which is often unavoidable. Nurses may work long hours and see a lot of faces, complete a high number of tasks, and move around for the entire time. You have to know how your body and brain respond to increased levels of tiredness because there is no room at all for mistakes to be made.

Getting to Know the Skill Demand

When it comes to the skills needed to be a nurse, the list could go on forever. There are a ton of things that you need to be able to do proficiently before passing your nursing exams and gaining your license. Top skills include the attributes on the list below.

  • Decision making
  • Fast knowledge acquisition
  • Practical thinking
  • High capacity
  • Critical observation
  • Personable and people-friendly

If this sounds like you, then you are definitely on the right path!

Being Confident

How confident are you as a person? Sometimes, not being confident in your personal life is a completely separate thing from your career, and this is an important distinction. If you don’t have confidence in yourself, you may struggle to get on with the complex sphere of demands that come along with a nursing role. You often have to make quick-fire judgment calls and there will be a lot of getting to know patients and building trust as a part of a shift. If you have the confidence to deliver yourself authentically, it will be much easier to establish rapport and create the best support for the rest of the team.

Embracing Self-Awareness

The last point is about self-awareness. It is crucial that all nurses possess the ability to be self-aware because this is where true growth happens. When a nurse understands their flaws and their strengths, they are better able to fortify their experience and knowledge and deliver both a safer service and a holistic one too. Nurses are an integral part of any healthcare team, and this fact remains strong. However, you have to know who you are in order to impact real positivity.

Knowing yourself is important for nursing roles. There are strenuous demands and a lot of things to observe during a shift, so it is in your best interest to determine whether or not you are up for the challenges ahead.

Welcome to Beautiful Moms

Hi! I’m Juliann, a wife to my wonderful husband, Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I first started Beautiful Moms Blog in 2008, my goal was to connect with and support other moms who were in the thick of raising young children. It became a creative outlet where I could share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with companies that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It’s so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. I have always believed that every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she’s in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms Blog has grown and evolved right along with me. Today, my children are adults, and I have embraced the blessings of being a grandma. My passion for encouraging women hasn’t changed—it has simply expanded to include every season of motherhood, from pregnancy and the newborn years to raising teenagers, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I’m excited to have my daughter, Myelie, as a contributor to Beautiful Moms. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood. She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a home wherever life takes you.

Together, we’re here to support women through every age and stage of motherhood—from pregnancy to menopause—with helpful advice, honest product recommendations, beauty and wellness tips, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

We are PR Friendly and love working with great companies!
