Checklist for Maintenance of Your Home During Summer

June 23, 2022 by Juliann

The warmer weather is finally here, so it’s time to start thinking about summer cleaning! Whether you want to get a jump-start on deep cleaning your home before guests arrive or simply getting the urge to declutter and refresh your space, we’ve got you covered.

Our comprehensive summer cleaning checklist will help take the guesswork (and stress!) out of tackling every nook and cranny in your abode. Plus, we’ve included 10 helpful tips to make the process quicker and easier to enjoy your summer worry-free.

Let’s get started!

Summer Cleaning Checklist

  1. Dust all surfaces, including ceiling fans, light fixtures, furniture, baseboards, windowsills, and blinds.
  2. Vacuum all floors, carpets, and upholstery.
  3. Wash all bedding, including duvets, blankets, comforters, and pillows.
  4. Launder curtains and other window treatments.
  5. Deep clean the kitchen, including washing appliances (inside and out), scrubbing the sink and countertops, cleaning the fridge (including shelves and drawers), and mopping the floor. Don’t forget to empty and organize your pantry while you’re at it!
  6. Sanitize the bathrooms from top to bottom, including toilets, showers, tubs, vanities, mirrors, tile grout, and floors.
  7. Organize and declutter closets, cabinets, and drawers throughout the house.
  8. Wash all doors, doorknobs, light switches, and outlet covers.
  9. Clean the fireplace (if you have one).
  10. Give the floors a final sweep or vacuum.

Tips to Make Summer Cleaning a Breeze

  1. Make a Plan

Before you start cleaning, it’s important to have a plan. Sit down and list all the areas in your home that need to be cleaned. Once you have your list, prioritize the items so you can focus your attention on the most important tasks first.

  1. Set a Schedule

Once you know what needs to be done, it’s time to set a schedule. Determine how often each area needs to be cleaned, and then create a cleaning schedule that works for you. If you need help staying on track, several apps and online tools can be helpful.

  1. Start from the the Outside

Summer is also a great time to focus on the outside of your home. This includes power washing the siding, cleaning the gutters, and trimming back any trees or shrubs that may be touching your house. It’s also important to pest control outside as it’s summertime, and you wouldn’t want kids to get contaminated by any pests that could be breeding.

You can hire professional help for this if you prefer not to do this all by yourself. Simply search for Cincinnati Power Washing (or wherever you live) online, and you will find hundreds of results to choose from to help you with the work. Just remember to take safety measures when handling any chemicals and follow the instructions on the back of the products.

  1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you start cleaning, ensure you have all the necessary supplies. This will save you time and frustration later on. In addition to basics like soap, sponges, and rags, don’t forget to stock up on things like glass cleaner, furniture polish, and carpet cleaner if you plan on using them.

  1. Start at the Top when you are inside

When you’re ready to start cleaning from inside , it’s always best to start at the top and work your way down. This will help prevent dirt and dust from settling on surfaces you’ve already cleaned.

  1. Dust First

When cleaning each room, begin by dusting all the surfaces. This includes ceiling fans, light fixtures, furniture, shelves, and baseboards. Use a microfiber cloth to trap dust and dirt instead of spreading it around.

  1. Vacuum Next

After you’ve dusted, vacuum all the floors – carpeted and hard surfaces alike. If you have any area rugs or throw carpets, vacuum them as well. Not only will this help remove dirt and debris, but it will also help keep your home free of allergens.

  1. Clean Mirrors and Glass

Next, move on to cleaning mirrors and other glass surfaces in the room. Use a quality glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth to avoid streaking.

  1. Move on to Floors

Once you’ve tackled the dusting, vacuuming, and mirror/glass cleaning, it’s time to move on to the floors. If you have hardwood floors, start by sweeping them and then follow up with mopping. If you have tile or linoleum, focus on scrubbing the grout lines to remove any dirt or debris that may be trapped there. Carpeted floors should be vacuumed first and then shampooed as needed.

  1. Take Your Time

Finally, don’t try to tackle everything in one day. Summer cleaning can be a big job, so take your time and spread it out over a few weekends or even weeks. By taking it slow, you can avoid getting overwhelmed and stressed out.

Conclusion

The warmer weather is finally here, and that can only mean one thing – it’s time to break out the cleaning supplies and tackle those projects you’ve been putting off all winter. But before you start, look at this summer cleaning checklist with 10 time-saving tips to help make the process a little easier.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
