How to Keep Your Cat Happy and Healthy

November 2, 2021 by Juliann

Any time you adopt a pet, you are bringing a new member into the family. A cat can serve as the companion that you never knew you needed who will give you loyalty and love while at the same time does not demand too much of your attention all throughout the day.

However, as low maintenance as most cats may be, there are still certain things that you will need to be aware of as a cat owner in order to ensure that your feline friend is as happy and healthy as possible.

Just because cats tend to be more independent than dogs and other pets, that doesn’t mean that they won’t need you to take care of them when it matters most. Moreover, you will need to be in tune with your cat’s needs in a particular way as they might not necessarily come to you when something is off.

With that in mind, here are some of the top ways in which you can keep your cat happy and healthy.

Go See the Vet

If you think that the only time to see the vet is when your cat is sick or injured, you aren’t necessarily giving them the routine medical care they really need to stay happy and healthy. The fact of the matter is that your cat will need routine vaccinations and checkups to ensure that everything is in tip-top shape with them physically.

For example, regular dental exams can help spot issues like tartar buildup, gum disease, or broken teeth before they become serious problems. Professional care, including procedures like cat dental cleaning, ensures your feline friend can maintain healthy teeth and gums as part of their overall well-being.

For this reason, you should look to bring your cat to the vet at least once a year for a checkup and more if they are due for vaccinations or booster shots. Early detection is one of the best ways in which to treat some of the most common illnesses that can affect cats, so be sure to keep up with routine checkups.

If you need to find a reliable veterinarian for your cat, check out Kelly Crossing Animal Hospital.

Keep Them Entertained

Since most cats tend to be rather passive in nature so long as their environment remains consistent, they can tend to become rather lazy and overly content. This means that over time, they might not have as much spring in their step. Moreover, they can easily put on too much weight without the right amount of exercise.

It is important that you do what you can to keep your feline friend active and entertained. There are a variety of toys and such that will help you do the job, but the most important thing is that you take the time to play with your cats and ensure they get the right amount of activity every day.

Feed Them a Balanced Diet

To that same point, it is also important to make sure that you are providing your cat with a healthy, balanced diet. While you want to ensure that your cat is eating enough, overfeeding them can be another easy trap to fall into. Check-in with your vet to find a cat food containing all of the nutrients your cat needs without unnecessary fat and calories.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
