Moving with Children: Expert Tips + Moving Checklist

September 22, 2023 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Let’s not sugarcoat it: Moving to a new home is stressful, especially for moms who are responsible for managing the move on top of their kids’ shifting emotions. Whether you’re moving across town or to a different state, planning ahead and staying organized to ensure a smooth move is essential for any mom.

Here are some steps to help moms move and ensure everything goes off without a hitch:

Plan the Move

Planning is a critical step in preparing for a move, especially when you have children. To make the process easier, it is essential to create a detailed moving checklist, including all the important tasks and prep work This may include big tasks, like researching your kids’ new school and scheduling movers, to the smaller tasks, like packing and organizing. By planning ahead, you can avoid last-minute surprises and ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible.

Involve the Kids

One of the best ways to make the transition to a new home easier for your children is by involving them in the moving process. This can help them feel more in control of the situation and reduce anxiety and stress. You can assign age-appropriate tasks such as packing their toys or books, labeling boxes, or even helping to choose the new house. By involving your kids, you can make the move a fun and exciting experience for the whole family.

Some great ways to involve your children in the moving process include:

  • Teaching them to pack their own clothes and toys: Teach them organizational skills by sorting toys, books, and clothes into their appropriate boxes.
  • Labeling boxes: Kids can help label boxes with the name of the room they belong to, such as “Living Room” or “Kitchen.” This will make unpacking easier when you arrive at your new home.
  • Sorting items for donation: Help your children learn to separate themselves from material attachments by sorting items they no longer need or want into a donation box.
  • Researching the new neighborhood: Older children can help research the new neighborhood and find out about local parks, schools, and activities. Bonus: See if they can come up with ideas for a future family picnic day!
  • Creating a moving scrapbook: Yes, disposable cameras are still a thing! In fact, they’re coming back in style. Give one to each of your kids so they can take pictures of the moving process. Then, you can collect them all and create a scrapbook together to treasure your family’s transition!

Prepare for Moving Day

Moving day can be chaotic, especially for the little ones. To make things easier, it is important to prepare ahead of time. Prepare by packing a bag of essentials, arranging accommodations for pets or young children, and ensuring that all important documents are safe and secure. Label each box with the contents and the room it belongs to — you can even color-code them depending on the room. Pack your fragile items carefully and use padding to prevent breakage. By staying organized on moving day, you can reduce stress and ensure that everything goes according to plan.

Make the move

Once you feel prepared for moving day, it’s time to make the move! Pack your belongings, beginning with the heaviest items (furniture) and the items you use the least (all those heavy books). If you hired movers, be sure to communicate any special instructions or concerns you may have.

Settle into the New Home

Once you arrive at your new home, it is essential to help your children adjust to their new surroundings. You can start by setting up their bedrooms first and exploring the new neighborhood together. Encourage your children to make new friends and get involved in the community. This can help them feel more comfortable and at home in their new environment.

Conclusion

Moving with children can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and organization, it can also be a fun and exciting adventure for the whole family. By following expert tips and using the provided moving checklist, moms can ensure a smooth and stress-free relocation that their children will remember for years to come.
