Is your home looking a bit dark and dreary? Below are some simple ways to brighten up your home that won’t break the bank.
Brightening interior spaces can bring vibrancy and a new lease of life to any home. Moreover, a brighter home can lead to improved mental health, whether from increased sunlight or potential from the use of brighter wall colors.
And the good news is that there are some straightforward renovations you can use to brighten your home, which would be especially helpful if you’re on a budget. Let’s dive in!
Let the Light In
Obviously finding ways to let more light in can lead to a brighter home. Of course, there are many obvious steps you could take (e.g., opening the curtains more often) but today our focus is primarily on small renovations.
Here are a few simple renovations to let additional light in to your home:
- Have larger doors or windows installed (e.g., you may want to look into a French door installation).
- Install skylights such as in your kitchen.
- Add more mirrors throughout your home.
Reflective Flooring
Having a more reflective floor type installed can also contribute to a brighter home. Of course, if you have carpets, simply having, say a wooden floor installed would automatically provide more reflectiveness.
What’s more, some timber floors are more reflective than others. Whatever of type of flooring catches your fancy, we recommend shopping around until you find the ideal option for you.
However, if you’d much rather go for maximum reflectiveness, consider having a polished concrete floor installed in your kitchen.
Light-Enhancing Curtains and Blinds
While we tend to think of blinds and curtains as a means of keeping the light out, there are curtains and blinds on the market that can let more light in than would normally be the case.
These would make sense if you want curtains or/and blinds that will allow more light in than the average installation would offer but which could still prove useful when it’s too bright out. In other words, it can help keep a balance and ensure your living room, kitchen and bedrooms stay pretty bright even when the blinds and perhaps also curtains are pulled over.
Shiny Countertops
If you’re thinking of having a new worktop installed in your kitchen, choose one with a glossy surface rather than a matte surface. As for the material, you might want to consider something like polished granite.
Additional Steps to Brightening Your Home
Aside from simple renovations, here are a few extra jobs worth considering to brighten up your home:
- Paint Colors – Obviously the color of your walls is a major factor in determining how bright your home is. Some great paint colors to achieve this include pale shades of blue and pale shades of grey.
- Reflecting Paint – Along with the color of your walls, more reflective walls can also help. There are a ton of reflective paint products on the market worth exploring. So, ultimately, a paint product available as a pale shade of blue or grey that also offers reflective qualities could work perfectly.
Once you’ve decided on what renovations and additional jobs you want to avail of, you should consider what your budget is and check that your plans would work financially.
Then, you’d need to consider what products to go with (e.g., what brand of reflective flooring or paint product). Also, you’d need to consider whether or not undertake these tasks DIY.
Most of these jobs are suitable for a DIYer with the right skills, knowledge and awareness of the necessary safety steps. The only jobs we’ve discussed today that wouldn’t be well-suited to a DIYer are, arguably, installing skylights, fitting French doors, adding a polished concrete floor, and perhaps the installation of a new countertop. But either way, if you’re in any doubt, always hire a professional.
If you go down the route of seeking a professional tradesperson for any of the renovations or jobs you’d like to opt for, you should obtain quotes from several tradespeople before deciding on which one(s) to go with.
